The day before Karl and Emilie’s son’s naming party, Karl’s estranged mother Vibeke arrives unannounced. Hoping to rejoin the family and prove herself as a grandmother, she inserts herself into the intimate weekend gathering at a seaside hotel. While Karl is furious, his sister Rikke insists Vibeke deserves a second chance. Over the course of the weekend, tensions rise, old patterns resurface, and long-buried family dynamics play out in front of confused in-laws and curious guests. What begins as a celebration quietly unravels into a confrontation with the past, filled with missteps, unresolved wounds, and moments of surprising warmth.
THE GUEST is a sharply observed drama about roles we inherit, the people we try to become, and the impossibility of ever fully escaping where we come from. Told with both humor and heart, it’s a story about a family trying to hold it together when everything starts to fall apart.

Statement of the director:
At first glance, THE GUEST may seem like a story about mental illness within a family. For me, it is more deeply about inheritance, the emotional patterns we absorb before we have words for them, and the responsibility we carry once we do.
I have always been interested in how emotional patterns move through families, especially when there is no language around them. Having experienced how mental illness can shape family dynamics across generations, I became increasingly aware of how silence and misunderstanding can be inherited as well. The absence of understanding can shape relationships just as much as the illness itself, creating distance and unspoken resentment that can persist across generations.
That idea that we inherit more than we realize has stayed with me for years. Not only the fear of repeating the past, but the responsibility that comes with becoming aware of it. Becoming a father changed my understanding of that responsibility. Parenthood is not about being whole; it is about taking responsibility for what you pass on. Including your fractures.
This film is not about diagnosing anyone. It is about the fragile space between parents and children. Where does the person end and the illness begin? How do you hold love and resentment at once?
A line from a poem by David Whyte captures the essence: “To forgive is to assume a larger identity than the person who was first hurt…” Forgiveness here is not about excusing or forgetting. It is about growing into a self that can hold both the wound and the pain that shaped it.
With THE GUEST I want to explore forgiveness, not as duty, but as transformation. The moment we see our parents as imperfect, something shifts. The moment we forgive them, something matures. And when we forgive ourselves, something opens.
This film is about that opening.
