THE OATH
DIRECTORS NOTE – BALTASAR KORMAKUR
I wanted to go back to the roots of storytelling with THE OATH and I wanted to make
a character driven drama thriller.
As a father of two young teenage girls - I strongly connect and empathise with the character of the doctor and his struggle. I understand his downfall and the relationship with his daughters is immensely important to me. That relationship is a delicate one that I wanted to explore and to examine the depths of it; being a father and what you would do in these circumstances - what is right and what is wrong.
The two lead male characters come from very different paths and very different backgrounds, however they are actually more alike than one might think at the beginning.
Neither of them can let go - just like the Judgment of Solomon or Li Quanfi's Chalk Circle, two women fighting over a child, pulling at her, both claiming the child as their own, until upon hearing that the child would need to be split down the middle to decide, the real mother lets go, fearing her child will be hurt. These two men can't let the girl go and they tear her apart.
The doctor has what appears to be a perfect life. I find it interesting to explore a man who passes judgment over others, a man who saves lives - faced with a moral question, and how he's in his own head desperately trying to find an answer.
I feel like for the past few years there are many stories about missing young girls in Iceland, a story about a young girl going missing comes out just about every weekend. There is a weird culture at the moment of gangsters, celebrity gangsters and these young girls and their lives crossing paths - it's an interesting social study. What are these girls drawn to? What aren't they getting at home?
I know a couple of stories personally, one close to the writer and another one close to me - they don't go as far as this story, but there are quite strong similarities. These stories take place in my surroundings. That's why I think its right to make it in Iceland - it feels authentic. As an artist it's important to stay connected and real.
