AKIK MARADTAK
Hungary
Aldo is 42, lost his wife and two children in the camps but is keeping himself together while working as a gynecologist.
Klára is 16, and has not gotten her period yet. She is still waiting for her father and mother to return from … well, she only knows they are "war prisoners". Her grandma takes her to see a gynecologist, Dr. Aladár (Aldo). The two of them find something in each other that they have been missing for years.
As they get closer and closer, they both get better and better. But as the Communist Party and the Soviet Empire takes over Hungary, their loving and pure father-daughter relationship is not welcome anymore.

Statement of the Director:
For me this film is first of all a hymn, an ode to a man who is totally wrecked but pulls himself together one last time to save another half-destroyed soul. At the same time, it is a one-sided, beautiful love story.
We have seen so many films about what happened before and during the Holocaust. But very few showed us the fate of those who remained with us, those who came back.
Setting the film in Budapest of the 1940s was an exciting challenge. Our low budget disciplined us to keep the story indoors or on dark empty streets – which, in a budding dictatorship, is totally adequate.
My main cinematographic references were TWO LOVERS by James Gray for its melodramatic story, PHANTOM THREAD by Paul Thomas Anderson for the visual style, and LEON by Luc Besson for the ambiguous relationship between a middle-aged reserved man and an energetic young girl.
