A stranger appears over the mountain, carrying little more than his determination. Isak, a man without a past, seeks a place to settle and carve life from the earth. High above the tree line, he finds a barren stretch of land, as unforgiving as it is full of promise.
The land tests him to his limits, until he meets Inger, a solitary woman shaped by resilience and quiet secrecy.
Together, they endure the elements and build a life, cultivating both the soil and a growing family as the seasons turn. But as years pass and the world closes in, and time, hardship, and desire reshape them, one question remains: is love forever?

Statement of the director:
Can we manage to love each other through a long life? Or is life so brutal that love cannot survive?

Inger and Isak come together out of necessity. Yet, they develop a lifelong love relationship. The story explores the fundamental difference between being a solitary soul and finding a mate to spend an entire life with. It is an unsentimental tale about the costs of love, the pain, forgiveness, and grace that a lifelong relationship can bring.
As people subjected to nature, Inger and Isak initially accept their fate and share the burdens between them in mutual dependence. They share everything in a childlike existence and are characterized by a deep gratitude for each other. Later, they also share a great secret: Inger's murder of a newborn child. And when she finally confesses the murder to Sheriff Heyerdahl, Isak remains by her side. While she is in prison, he bears the burden alone with the farm and the children. And as always, when one of them is absent, a "desolate emptiness" prevails in the story. Something is missing. Inger surprisingly emerges stronger from her years in prison. She has learned to read and write and has acquired a craft as a seamstress. With newfound confidence, Inger challenges the foundation of their life. The need for two pairs of hands, which brought them together and symbolized the necessity of their union, is gone.
Together, they have survived temptations, hard times, seven years of separation, and Inger’s murder of their newborn child. But as a seamstress, Inger is freed from the cyclical yoke of farming and gains an independent identity. She is no longer dependent on Isak. He is humiliated by the power that reading and writing give her and by her independence. The freedom is intoxicating, and she becomes both ruthless, greedy, and proud.
Inger is unfaithful, and Isak is pathetic and stubborn. Their world is falling apart. They hurt each other so deeply that we think, "these wounds can never heal." When Inger says she would never have chosen Isak if she had been free of the cleft lip, she expresses (without realizing it) a deep contempt for the life they have had together.
Although Isak is a robust soul and can endure much, he is deeply wounded by Inger. It is neither religion nor wisdom that brings them back together. All the pain cannot be undone, and the world cannot be freed from the progress they have experienced together. Neither of them can take back the years lived, or as Isak tries, prevent the children from choosing their own paths. It is forgiveness that saves Isak and Inger—the willingness to see the weakness in the other, a human frailty that is recognized because it is like the weakness in oneself, which also needs forgiveness. Inger's cleft lip makes her so ostracized among "her own" that she ultimately chooses to leave her people. It is a great decision to leave one's \"clan\" and seek a better life alone in an unknown place. The risk is enormous. There is no guarantee that she will be better received by strangers or that the prejudices against her will be any less elsewhere. Inger's choice to leave what she knows is undoubtedly courageous.
We do not know how long Inger has been wandering before she meets Isak, but she is starving and will die if she does not find a new home before winter. She finds Isak, and this random choice shapes the rest of her life.
Inger undergoes enormous development. She is courageous in her actions, dares to admit that she killed a child, and takes the consequences of it. And she dares to face the unknown in the belief that something good can come of it. She has been ashamed of her cleft lip all her life, has hidden it, but trusts, for example, a foreign surgeon or people who mean well by teaching her to stand on her own two feet. Her willingness to learn is one of the reasons for her rapid development. But the greatest courage Inger shows is that she dares to admit her mistakes. She asks Isak for forgiveness and receives it. She also has the ability to forgive herself. Inger is a sincere soul and grows far beyond the limitations that life imposed on her.
About Isak, we know nothing more than what we see and discover in his actions and interactions with other characters.
Isak is rather childish; proud, stubborn, but persistent and reliable. Isak possesses an intuitive wisdom that is rooted in his commitment to nature, to Inger and the family, and to his life's work. He stays by Inger’s side even though she has killed their child. When Isak stands and coughs and clears his throat for Inger to notice something he has done and is proud of, he is like many males in nature who show off how potent, strong, or colorful they are. At the same time, Isak impresses with his skills. A sensitivity in the way he sets a snare or lures a fish to a hook. There is nothing Isak would not do for Inger. He bears heavy burdens, defies snow and cold, forgives her the murder, and when Inger covers her mouth, he removes her hand.
He wants her as she is. His love for Inger is unconditional. Isak can be tempted, but he is not a wandering soul. Isak has entered into a "pact" with nature; "I accept that you set the terms if I am allowed to do what I can to improve my lot in life." He is therefore poorly equipped for radical changes. He does as farmers have done for untold generations; accepts that they are part of something larger than themselves, "the great wheel."
Which continues to roll after they are gone.
