Pawel, an architecture student, opposes the blue-blooded lifestyle of his family and his father’s will. He decides to have an affair with night club dancer Lidka. It would be the last good pre-war memory. Protagonists want to save their sensitivity, they distance themselves from reality, they create their own situations. The lovers meet again in totally different circumstances. The war in the film is hidden in ellipsis. Exhausted Pawel, after his return from the Auschwitz concentration camp, trades currency and works as a waiter. Lidka married Pawel’s cousin, also a night club dancer, and leads a countess’ life. History destroyed the pre-war world order. Irony is mixed with nostalgia in poetical proportions. An atmospheric melodrama in which both mutual fascination and love problems result from Polish history and class segregation. An adaptation of Stanislaw Dygat’s novel (1948) from the so-called intellectual issues current. It includes brilliant dialogues, a kind of flirt school.
