Statement of the director:
This film was born out of our own confusion and helplessness. Out of the feeling that words no longer meant what they once meant. That lies could disguise themselves as faith. That people who lived through totalitarianism were beginning to speak its language again – sometimes without even realising it. We were living in a reality, where the aggressor could present itself as a saviour, cynicism could pass for patriotism, and submission could masquerade as tradition. What disturbed us most was the way this distortion slowly began reshaping people from within – their thinking, their behaviour, their relationships, even their most intimate moments. The corruption was no longer confined to public life. It had entered the emotional and moral fabric of life itself. Marina and Gosha grew out of that contradiction. They are people we know intimately. Our parents, neighbours, teachers, doctors, friends. People capable of tenderness, humour, faith and love, but also of silence, self-deception and compromise. People trying to preserve some sense of dignity and stability while slowly losing their connection to truth, and sometimes even to themselves. Perhaps, in the end, this was our way of giving these characters a chance to reclaim a part of their humanity – to cleanse themselves and try to begin again, even if it is already too late.
