Mare has never flown, although she lives right next to the airport with her husband and their three teenage kids. She loves her family, cares for them, but sometimes almost feels like a stranger in her own home. Who are these people she lives with? Mare finds herself gazing at the planes overhead, longing for change and the unknown. When one day a young man moves into the house next door, she puts her life to the test.

Statement of the Director/s
The idea of making a film with a straightforward storyline, which allows more room to work with the actors and gives them a chance to contribute, appealed to me. In the course of countless numerous rehearsals, we started dissecting every scene in order to establish a really close relationship with the characters. The characters in MARE are fragile and strong at the same time. They do not deceive themselves, which is rare. Mare is a contemporary protagonist with the courage to take her needs seriously. She is not unhappy with her life, but she wants more. Maybe she wants it all: love and passion, safety and adventure, her family and a life of her own – things that are sometimes hard to reconcile with being a mother. I wanted to depict the complex relationship of a marriage in a raw, carefully detailed and dramatically undramatic way so that it practically becomes a physical experience for filmgoers.

Biography of the Director/s
Born in Lucerne, Switzerland in 1973, she studied film at the Zurich University of the Arts. Her debut feature film, DAS FRÄULEIN, won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival and the Heart of Sarajevo at the Sarajevo Film Festival while CURE – THE LIFE OF ANOTHER won an award at the film festival Max Ophüls Prize. MARE is her third feature film. She is a member of the European Film Academy.
