AN IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT is a warm, engaging and often humerous celebration of an anti-trend, namely the comeback of 'analogue' in our increasingly digital lives. It follows its likeable anti-hero – a Viennese biologist who happens to be the world's leading (and only) expert on spider eye muscles – in his intrepid endeavous to save the world's last Polaroid factory.
The documentary – shot on 35mm – is an invitation to fall in love again with tangible, real things, and asks the question of just how digital and technocratic we can stand society to become.
Insta Stories, streaming, Twitter, e-books and 24h social media availability – the hype and drive towards the complete digital makeover of our daily lives is being challenging for more and more people, who experience a yearning for authenticity and real values opposed to alternative facts. Digital Detox and slow food are growing trends; analogue photography, vinyl, handwriting, paper books and homemade products are having a renaissance.
In his documentary, filmmaker Jens Meurer (who produced one of the first all-digital cinema films, RUSSIAN ARK) meets people who took a stand against the digital tide when the rest of us were still salivating over our first smartphone. No one more so than IMPOSSIBLE's very own Don Quixote, Florian "Doc" Kaps, who in 2008 staked his entire wealth and career on rescuing once iconic Polaroid, just when everyone else in the world felt analogue was over for good. Needless to say this went terribly wrong … at first.
AN IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT is a sensuous and entertaining film about the worldwide phenomenon: The world's re-discovery of 'analogue' as a counter-movement to what the New York Times described as 'the tyranny of convenience'. A tactile slow, deep breath in our ever-faster existence. Filmed on 35mm, and with a soundtrack recorded live by a forty-piece jazz orchestra, IMPOSSIBLE is a theatrical (sic!) documentary telling the inspiring story of an analogue visionary underdog who never stopped believing that the impossible must be possible.
